Confessions

I Confess: I was pretty nervous to publish yesterday's post. I wrote it kind of on a whim earlier this week setting out to write a post pretty different than that, but I proof read it and hit publish. I'm overwhelmed with the amount of loving feedback I've gotten on the post, especially from my friends from home and APO brothers. I'm so happy to be apart of Alpha Phi Omega, and all of the love I've gotten in the past couple of days speaks volumes on how great of an organization it is!

I Confess: Although I'm happy that this is my last of of classes, I'm super nervous for my Econ final on Friday. Send good vibes my way if you can!

I Confess: I have a "budget" in a spreadsheet on my computer of things I'm "allowed" to buy this summer, and someone needs to cut me off. As soon as I get home and get my first paycheck, I'm going to need a straight jacket to keep me from immediateley hitting up the mall!

I Confess: I've got Derby on my mind. As excited as I am to go home, that's not before I've gotten my fill of Kentucky Derby festivities. My friends and I plan on hitting up a couple of fun things next week and I can't wait!

I Confess: CM took me running yesterday (wish her good luck on the Mini Marathon this weekend!) and I can barely walk today. Last time I wrote one of these, I talked about getting in a workout routine... well.. I didn't.

I Confess: I should be studying instead of blogging right now!

Until next time!

Storytime: Getting cut from Sorority Recruitment

My freshman year at Bellarmine is coming to a close. (which side-note, I cannot believe! More to come later this week) And lets just say, it didn't quite end up like I thought it would. One of the biggest things that I wanted in my college experience was to be a part of greek life. Since pretty much the 7th grade, I had my heart set on being in a sorority. When going through the process of choosing a school, I put way to much emphasis on greek life. I'm not saying I applied to schools only because of greek life, because that is not true at all, I knew I didn't want to be at a gigantic school with super competitive greek life (Alabama, UofI, IU etc.) but I knew I wanted to be apart of it.

Flash forward after I finally made the decision to attend Bellarmine University. Bellarmine only has one Panhellenic sorority, Phi Mu. I spent the summer perusing Phi Mu crafts, shirts and pics on Pinterest and Tumblr, not posting them of course because I didn't want to jinx it, but I was very excited to rush. Finally, September came, and I participated in formal recruitment. I agonized over which business casual outfit would be perfect for each round, perfectly curled my hair and mascaraed my lashes until I was certain I looked just the part. I attended the first night, sisterhood night, and philanthropy night, and then I got cut.

My absolute worst nightmare had come true. I had no backup plan, there were no other sororities, there was no spring rush, nothing. I was completely devastated. I remember running out of class at 12:15 to pick up my card from the activities center, and then feeling my heart drop to the pit of my stomach when I found mine and felt the tell-tale card stock letter in the envelope instead of the coveted invite slip to Pref night. I kid you not, I was fighting back tears almost my entire Spanish class. To make things worse, my roommate received a bid. I'm not trying to say anything bad on her part, I was just jealous and sad that I had not received a bid.

I spent the rest of the night in a trance watching the PNMs eagerly walk to the pref ceremony and later on that night receive their bids. I literally sat outside for two hours just staring off into space. The next day was the day I had been waiting for for years: Bid Day. As luck would have it, Bid Day festivities started out just 5 feet outside my ground floor window. I saw your quintessential Bid Day preparations go on and heard chants and songs for a good hour before being mercifully saved by my Aunt. I spent the rest of the weekend at her house avoiding my new reality.

Thankfully I had a support system around me including friends on campus, my Aunt near by, and friends from home reminding me that being in a sorority didn't define me. I especially remember one of my good friends telling me that if this was my "worst nightmare" than I was being stupid and basic. This made me laugh and feel better, shockingly.

I'm generally not a sore loser, so the rest of the semester progressed fine, I did well in all of my classes and was happy to be home. That is, until I looked through my senior year yearbook and read through the messages from all of my best friends. Many of them referenced my love for greek life and their confidence that I would be in the top sorority on campus and be it's president one day. Talk about a painful reminder. It got a little bit worse when I had a holiday brunch, and many of my friends discussed their newfound love in the greek system.

As jealous as I was, I promised myself I would not be bitter, and I think that I've done a very good job of keeping that promise.

I then got to second semester and got word that our campus was trying to set up an Alpha Phi Omega chapter. I was elated. Alpha Phi Omega is a co-ed fraternity centered around the values of leadership, friendship and service. My cousin, SC, is in a chapter at his school, and I had only heard great things about it from him. I immediately expressed my interest to the group and was welcomed with warm arms.

Since January, I've been a part of the Bellarmine University Alpha Phi Omega Petitioning Group, have been elected to serve as the Secretary on the executive board for the 2016-2017 school year, and we have plans to finish our charter and become an official chapter by the start of fall semester. I'm so glad to have found these brothers on campus and become a part of such a welcoming chapter.

I would have loved to be a part of Phi Mu, and have nothing but nice things to say about their organization, philanthropy, and sisterhood, but I have to believe that the reason I was not chosen to be apart of their organization was so that I can throw myself into APO full force and make it the chapter we as a petitioning group want it to be. I believe that EVERYTHING happens for a reason, and I am nothing but pumped to finally be a part of the greek organization that I've been waiting for all along.

Weekend Recap

This weekend was awesome.

It was my first official Thunder Over Louisville experience and it was so great!
I hadn't been to Thunder in over a decade, so I was super excited when CM invited me to hang out with her fam on Saturday! We ended up at a Marina for most of the afternoon, and watched the fireworks show at a family member's house.

Big Four Bridge on the Ohio River

Amazing Boat Ride!

Jets in the Sunset

Gorgeous sunset on the Ohio before the Fireworks

Not to mention Friday night was spent watching an Elle King concert here at Bellarmine!

Me and Aunt Linda post-concert

CM and I
Pre-Concert Shenanigans

I also wanted to mention that I attended the Pre-Law Society senior send-off banquet Thursday night at the Bristol Bar and Grille on Bardstown Road, and I would highly recommend it! Everything I had was delicious!

Friday 5

Okay, well I haven't blogged since last Friday, but I figured I would at least check in! The semester is coming to an end, my first official final exam is only one week from today, and I'm excited and nervous to be done with the year!
Let's get in to my:

1.
Elle King
I'm super excited to be going to Bellarmine's annual Hillside concert tonight! Elle King is headlining with Justin Paul Lewis opening, it should be really good! Heck even if it does rain, $7 isn't too shabby! I'll be sure to share some pictures next week!
(If you live in the Louisville area, tickets are only $20 for the public!)

2.
Activities Ending
Last night I attended the Pre-Law Society Senior Send-Off Banquet, and Tuesday we had our Alpha Phi Omega CAPS meeting. I can't believe the year is already over, but I'm excited for next year, as I'll be serving as Secretary on the Executive Board of both organizations! These are both orgs that I'm super passionate and excited about, so I can't wait to be serving on e-board for both of them!

3.
I spent some time enjoying the (ridiculously hot) sun last weekend and got some.. interesting sunburn lines, but I also finally finished Modern Romance by Aziz Ansari! It took me a while because I wasn't really giving myself time to read, but it was so good! If you enjoy his comedy and non-fiction books, you'll surely love it! It was much more informative than I expected, but really enjoyed it.

4.
I've been using this blush palette (particularly the color in the middle) as blush for about a year now, and I love it! It is so perfect for summer, and gives the perfect peachy glow! It even looks great mixed with just a touch of bronzer and some mascara on days where I don't feel like putting a ton of makeup on. The best part? It's super inexpensive and can be found at the drug store.

5.
Blog Post Requests
Summer is quickly approaching (for college students at least ;)) and I'll have much more time to write and plan for the blog. My question is, what do you guys want to see? Comment down below, or e-mail: NorthShoreProper@gmail.com requests! I'll be sure to write them down and put them in the queue!

I hope everyone has a fantastic weekend!

Friday 5

Well, this week has absolutely flown by! I can't believe it's already Friday! It seemed like the week was going painfully slowly at the beginning of the week, and now it's the weekend. After today's classes, there are only 8, yes 8! school days left in my freshman year of college! That's absolutely unbelievable. We're finally getting some enjoyable weather here in Louisville which is more than welcome by me! I wore my new shirt from J.Crew factory yesterday and it was perfect with a pair of chinos!

1.
I picked up this tumbler with a store credit I had at Country Club Prep and I couldn't be happier with it! I filled it up with ice water at 10 on Wednesday night, and there was still ice in it after lunch on Thursday! I got the 20oz and promptly put my favorite CCP sticker on it!

2.
Happy Birthday to my BFF Jessica (yesterday) my Dad (today) and my Aunt Mary (today)! Lot's of April birthdays.

3.
Louisville Bats Game

Instagram
Last night we attended the Louisville minor league baseball team home opener and it was super fun! The weather was amazing and besides some personal issues that were going on, CM and I had a great time! I definitely want to attend more games there in the future!
(Wearing my new shirt!)

4.
When I was home over spring break I picked up some super basic t-shirts from Old Navy, and they have been the perfect thing to throw on with a pair of shorts or jeans! I love dressing them up with some fun jewelry like hoops, or a lariat necklace!
I wore a stone grey one with these shorts today. (It was almost too hot for it now! We're up to 85˚!)

Anxious

I don't often get anxious anymore, and hardly ever about things other than my health. Last year when my lung collapsed and I was in the hospital for 8 days, I spent the rest of 2015 dealing with PTSD related to my "injury" and health. Although it kind of sucked having to deal with such terrible amounts of medical anxiety, I did learn a lot of coping mechanisms, and by November, the effects were barely noticeable by me or anyone else.

Last night was a bad night.
I crawled in to bed around 12 and decided to finished up an episode of Southern Charm (season 2 reruns) I had been watching. It was lights out for me at about 12:45, a perfectly acceptable time for someone who was planning on waking up at 8:30. And then it was 1, 1:15, 1:30, 2, 2:30... I lay in bed for about an hour before switching my computer back on in hopes that more Bravo would lull me to sleep as it often does. No such luck. I turned my computer off again at about 3, and finally fell asleep at 4:15am. I HATE this. The whole time I was working myself up about how little sleep I was going to get and how much work I have to get done in the morning and how I don't know what I'm going to wear to my interview that afternoon yet and how there was a presentation I wanted to attend but I could only arrive late would that be okay? who should I e-mail? It went on like this for hours, and now here I sit Monday afternoon on the verge of a mental breakdown. Some of this could have been prevented sure, perhaps I shouldn't have had a diet coke around 9pm, or I could have gotten more work done over the weekend to make my week less stressful, but these thoughts only make me more panicked and anxious.

I'm currently laying in my bed typing this and listening to the sound of rain outside in hopes that I will be able to relax myself enough to get some more work done. I'm just so frustrated. I hate losing control of my body like last night when I couldn't fall asleep, and today when I have this underlying sense of panic following my every move. I want more than anything to feel relaxed, or just to crawl under my sheets and have a do over of my morning, but I can't - cue more anxiety.

I guess it's just one of those days. Everyone has good days and bad days, this one is just one of my bad days! I just need to accept it and move on. I can't change anything that has already happened, so I'm just going to make the best out of the rest of my day and the best choices I can make, and everything will turn out fine in the end. Right?

Friday 5

Hi everyone! I hope you all had an amazing week! The weather down in Louisville has been unseasonably chilly, which is unfortunate, since I just got a bunch of cute summer clothes in from J.Crew Factory (40% off all clearance!), but I'm hopeful that my weekend will still be fun!

Before I start I'd also just like to let you all know that I'm participating in Bellarmine's Relay for Life tomorrow and if you're interested in donating, you can do so here!

Linking up to share my Friday 5!

1.
Southern Charm is back!
This has got to be one of my favorite TV shows. I wish that it ran more than once a year, because I seriously love it! the fashion, the parties, the hilarious one-liners, it has everything! If you don't watch it, I suggest you check it out, it's on Bravo! on Monday's at 9pm.

2.
Espadrilles
I don't know what has gotten into me lately, but I'm loving the espadrille trend I've seen everywhere. It's got me gunning for a new pair of summer wedges.
Shop some of my faves here:

3.
NCA College Nationals
Me & my roommate at the Nationals Preview this weekend
My roommate is competing in NCA Cheerleading National finals this morning with Bellarmine Cheerleading, so please send good vides down to Daytona!

4.
New Hair
I have another hair appointment in a few weeks (HairBarLouisville is amazing!) and I can't wait to change up my hair again! I'm thinking lighter for the summer?
via
(You can see what my hair currently looks like in this post, and what it looked like natural here.)

5.
Self-Tanner
I finally used my new self-tanner that I picked up and I'm loving it! It's made me nice and dark without looking orange. It also dries almost instantly and doesn't get messed up by rain or when i wash my hands! I can do a whole post about it soon.

What's in your five this week?

Casual OOTD

A couple of days ago, I threw this outfit on for class and thought it was so cute and comfy! I loved this outfit so much. I wore my mom's old college sweatshirt (similar to this one) and some old jeans that I distressed myself (similar to these). I really love the lighter wash for spring,  I think it makes the outfit a little bit lighter and brighter. Since it's Master's week, of course I had to throw on my Southern Proper Master's hat. It was a little chilly in the morning, so I threw on my fave spring jacket, and finished everything off with my trusty converse.

This outfit is perfectly casual for class and running errands, especially for this time of year where the weather can be so questionable! I've fallen in love with this style of jeans again this spring. They're tighter in the thigh, and then loosed up in the calf, so they're more of a "straight leg" fit, and I cuff them at the bottom. I picked out a bunch of cute pairs in the widget below. Click through to find your fave:

Return of the Button Down

Can you count how many times I've featured this button down in a post? I can't. I think that that just goes to show how versatile a piece like this can be!
I wore this outfit to a restaurant opening and a 21st birthday party last Friday and not only was I super comfortable, I also felt confident, as it's one of my favorites! I didn't really think about the party when I got dressed, so I felt a little bit weird wearing a button down, but I felt confident nonetheless, and that's what is important!

These jeans are from Nordstrom "Trend" and they're super comfy. They're stretchy, but they have a really nice dark wash, and the length is perfect on me. I rolled them up a tad just to make sure they looked alright with my booties. My boots are super old, I actually picked them up at Kohls like five years ago, so ahead of trends - I know, but there are plenty similar ones out there!

Side-note: these photos really show how light my hair is!

Top - Old Navy
Sunglasses - Amazon
Bracelets - Alex and Ani
Watch - Old "Jolie" (Similar: Save or Splurge)
Jeans - Nordstrom
Purse - Kate Spade (Similar)
Boots - Candies (Similar or try these)
Lips - Fresh

What I've Learned in 4 Years of Blogging

Hard to believe, but four years ago today, I created this blog. I can't even tell you the original name because honestly, I don't remember! I had just gotten home from Hawaii on Spring Break, I was bored, and I created a blog.

In the last 4 years, I've learned a lot about blogging, even though I surely have a lot more to learn!

Blog for yourself
Over the past four years, I've watched bloggers start out and become way more popular and successful than me, and at times it can be super discouraging. I think the most important piece of advice I've read is to blog for yourself. Don't start out with the goal to gain followers or make money. This blog has pretty much always been a way for me to document my life and share my thoughts with whoever cares to listen.

Talk to other Bloggers
This is a new one for me. I recently have joined a group of lots of bloggers who have not only helped give advice about my blog, I've learned a lot about different blogging platforms, and more about the business and technology side of everything! Your blogging friends can be great resources when you have questions.

Make Mistakes
I think that everyone makes choices that they regret, someones we qualify those as mistakes. I've made a lot of changes regarding my blog over the last few years, name, themes, URLs, etc. I think that these mistakes, although they may have set me back, they happened and there is not much I can do about it now!

Write when you want to write.
One of the biggest issues I have had over the last four years was being inspired. Some time I would feel like I had  to write a post just to get content out, but I know that my best content always comes from when I'm writing inspired! Somedays I'll have a flood of ideas come in, and it's always super important for me to write them down so I can schedule them out.

Thank you all for reading, weather this be the first post you read, or you've been following since the beginning.
THANK YOU

Friday 5

Linking up once again with the 5 on Friday gang!

1.
Fresh Face Days
I love putting on my makeup in the morning as much as the next girl, and don't expect to be in Ulta with me for less than a half hour, but sometimes, I just feel like having a makeup-free fresh face day! I always feel so much cleaner and fresh if I skip makeup in the morning (usually on a particularly gloomy day like yesterday!). My only problem is that recently, my skin has been super oily no matter what I seem to do! Does anyone have any recommendations?

2.
Currently Reading
I've been trying to read "Modern Romance" by Aziz Ansari (one of my favorite comedians!) for over a month now, and every time I pick it up, I become more and more fascinated with it. If you're at all interested in social media, or statistics - two of my personal favorites- I highly recommend picking it up.

3.
iPhone SE
Is anyone else kind of confused by this? I understand that it has insanely upgraded features, but why wouldn't Apple create a new design? It literally loos exactly the same as my 5s.
via

4.
Thunderstorms
Yesterday I was almost cuaght in a downpour on my way back from class and narrowly missed being drenched. However, as soon as I got back in the room,  I opened the windows and blinds so I could watch the storm and listen to it. They always remind me of how much my Grandpa used to love them. He would always go outside and watch the storm instead of staying in, and my dad always stands at our screen door watching a good summer storm.

5.
Looking Forward To
I'm super excited to be in the home stretch of Freshman Year. I cannot believe we're so close to being Sophomores already! There is so much fun (and not so fun... aka finals) stuff that happens at the end of the year from Relay for Life to end of year dinners and events. I can't wait to break out the Lilly and end the school year strong.

What are you looking forward to?
